Separate samples of polycrystalline, cubic, face-centered copper powder and thin copper sheet are irradiated with X-rays from a copper-anode tube. A Geiger-Müller counter tube automatically rotates to record the radiation constructively reflected from various crystal planes. Bragg diagrams are automatically recorded, allowing the association of Bragg reflections with individual lattice planes. Unlike the powder sample, the rolled thin sheet produces a spectrum showing the alignment of crystallites (rolled texture), which becomes more complete upon heating the sheet.

  • Measure the intensity of Cu X-rays backscattered by a cubic, crystallizing copper powder sample at varying scattering angles
  • Assign Brag's reflections to individual lattice planes
  • Record the Brag's spectrum of a thin copper sheet
  • Repeat the measurements from task 3 after annealing the copper sheet
