Over 126,000 1997-2004 Corvettes were recalled due to steering column lock system problems. A column lock failure can disable these C5 Corvettes: All 97-04 manual trans, 97-00 auto trans, 01-04 European export auto trans. Note: Only US Domestic 01-04 w/auto trans are not susceptible to a column lock failure. Recall work has disabled the physical column lock in most C5s, but failures can still occur in these Corvettes resulting in Pull Key, Wait 10 Seconds and Service Column Lock messages, and the dreaded 2 mph fuel cut-off. If your C5’s steering wheel still locks with the key out, a failure can cause all of the above problems, AND leave the steering wheel stuck locked.
